Mombasa Governor Joho Strikes Unity Deal with Senator Gideon Moi Ahead of 2022 Presidential Race

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi have struck a unity deal and pledged to work together ahead of 2022 presidential race.

Joho and Moi have both declared they will be running for Presidency in 2022 and their unity is seen as an attempt to tame Deputy President William Ruto, who is considered a frontrunner in the race to succeed President Uhuru.

The two held a closed-door meeting at Governor Joho’s office in Mombasa, when Moi paid him a courtesy call.

“We are here today to agree the country needs us to move together and we will. After Ramadhan, we will be all over the country telling the people that we  need to have serious conversations on matters affecting them,” said Joho after the meeting.

“Our focus is on the people. Changing and uplifting the lives of the Coast and Rift Valley regions and Kenya as a whole. There are issues that Mr Joho has raised which make part of the conversation by Kenyans.  We will deal with those issues if we engage each other,” Moi, who landed in Mombasa in a chopper, said.

Moi has been embroiled in a supremacy battle with DP Ruto in the past, but when their rivalry seemed to subside after last year’s elections, it was rekindled last month after Ruto’s failed meeting with former President Daniel Moi. Leaders from Ruto’s camp accused the senator of blocking the DP from visiting the ex-president by virtue of being his son.

Ruto landed in Moi’s Kabarak home in a chopper last month,  but did not see the retired President. A statement from the ex-head of state’s office said Ruto visit coincided with Moi’s date with his doctors.

The Kenya African National Union (KANU) party leader described Joho as an “extremely important man in Kenya’s political circles.”

“Joho is well-meaning and like-minded,” Gideon said in Mombasa.
