NYS Scandal: 12 More Suspects Surrender Themselves to Police, 15 Others at Large

12 out of the 27 suspects being pursued by police over their involvement in the Sh9 billion scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS) have surrendered to authorities.

The 12 are part of a group of 54 suspects, including Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Lillian Omollo and NYS Director-General Richard Ndubai, mentioned in the scam. The 54 include 40 government officials and 14 business operators.

Directorate of Criminal Investigation boss George Kinoti on Thursday confirmed the arrest of the 12, but said 15 others are still at large.

“We have formed a special unit to track and arrest all the suspects named in the scandal and we are urge them to surrender because we will find and arrest them wherever they are,” said Kinoti.

PS Omollo, Ndubai alongside several other accused persons pleaded not guilty to different charges including; conspiracy to commit an offense of corruption and fraud, when they were arraigned at a Nairobi court on Tuesday.

Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, who heard the matter ruled the suspects be remanded as they await a ruling on whether they will be released on bail or not on Tuesday, June 6th.

The judge further  ordered those who failed to appear in court to surrender to authorities before Thursday, 2pm.

Suspects who surrendered to DCI on Thursday include; Kenneth Mwathi Mburu, Nicholas Ochieng Adhere, David Maina Wainaina, George Otieno Ouma, Peter Mahugu Muritu, Michael Wesley Ojiambo and Lucas Owino Otieno.

Others are Christopher Mauala Simbauru, Tabitha Nyambura Ndungu, Clara Wanjiru Mbau, Simon Kanyi Kiiru and Peter Muthoni Mugongo.
