President Uhuru Fires 13 Cabinet Secretaries, Retains 6

President Kenyatta on Friday revealed the team he will be working with in his second term in office.

Addressing the nation at State House in Nairobi, the president said, “Today I would want to name a few of those who will be working with me.” Six Cabinet Secretaries serving in his first term in office have survived the axe, while thirteen of them have been shown the door.

Those who have been retained include Henry Rotich (Treasury), Najib Balala (Tourism), James Macharia (Transport and Infrastructure), Fred Matiang’i (Education), Charles Keter (Energy) and Joseph Mucheru (ICT).

Joseph Kinyua remains the Head of Civil Service, deputized by Wanyama Musiambo, Nzioka Waita has been named as Chief of Staff, while former Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua is the new State House Comptroller.

Former Jubilee Turkana senate aspirant John Munyes, former Marsabit Governor Ukur Yattani and Keriako Tobiko, who resigned as Director of Public Prosecutions on Friday are some of the names President Kenyatta has forwarded to Parliament for vetting to be appointed to Cabinet.

“Over the next few weeks, I will be making further announcements to fill cabinet and principals secretary positions as well as our SAGAs (Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies) and Commissions as we continue to populate the government with those who will be charged with the responsibility of executing our agenda in the next five years,” the President stated.

Keriako Tobiko is a joke. James Macharia (Transport and Infrastructure) needs to go. All the people who have died of road accidents and he has done nothing about it.

Why was Amina Mohammed let go? Transport guy stays with all the slaying of so many people on Kenyans roads, what the heck. I will ask like @ Guest 1 would, what is Uhuru smoking/drinking lately? Surely Amina Mohammed????

Disapointed. I expected Matiangi to take transport and road safety, Nelson Marwa internal security.

  4. Except for Fred Matiang’i, I…
Except for Fred Matiang’i, I don’t care who else was retained because to be truthful he is the only result oriented among the six. I care more that Uhuru decided to do away with Amina Mohammed and Mwangi Kiunjuri. It is so sad after Amina Mohammed used her international influence, experience, and excellent skills to keep and maintain Kenya on the international map and defend the government during very turbulent times. As for Mwangi Kiunjuri, this is a guy who could have easily cruised through as a new governor for Laikipia but Uhuru convinced him to stay and defend his government. The other person who should have been retained is Eugene Wamalwa. Besides performing well in his docket, for strategic reasons, Wamalwa is the best to fly the Western Kenya flag because he is loyal. I hope that Uhuru is not planning to fill these posts with some NASA leaning individuals in order to appease them. It would be the worst strategic plan. One needs to reward people who have stood with him and are performing. I hope there is something we do not know yet, but if cabinet secretaries were to be retained, only four individuals needed to be retained namely Fred Matiangi, Amina Mohammed, Mwangi Kiunjuri, and Eugene Wamalwa. If he had retained these four and sacked all the rest, it would have been the best cabinet realignment.

The only problem with your analysis is fact that you are missing one key factor at play here – tribal math. Doesn’t matter how good you are, you may not belong to the “right” tribe or you may be a thorn in the tribal arithmetic. Such is the sad reality of politics and governance in Kenya

  5. I never heard anywhere in…
I never heard anywhere in his speech that the ones not renamed were sacked or fired. UK just named his first rate picks, doesn’t mean Amina, Monica Juma, Kiunjuri or Rachielle Omamo can’t be picked.

Majority of these former CS are GOOD people in some way; however Kenya needs the very BEST in competence and character. Many more are better and waiting on the sidelines to serve this Marvel of a country-otherwise known as “Wakanda”(comics). They CS have been there, did that and have scars to show for it; but I doubt that was enough to take the “Wakanda” where she ought to be.
