President Uhuru Sworn-in for His Second Term in Office

President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially assumed power for his second term after he took oath of office at a ceremony held at Kasarani Stadium on Tuesday.

Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto were sworn in by Chief Registrar of Judiciary, Anne Amadi and in presence of Chief Justice David Maraga.

“I swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Republic of Kenya; that I will obey, preserve, protect and defend this Constitution of Kenya, as by law established, and all other laws of the Republic; and that I will protect and uphold the sovereignty, integrity and dignity of the people of Kenya”, said Mr Kenyatta holding a Bible on his right hand as he took the oath of office.

The master of ceremony, Duncan Okello said the Bible used to swear-in President Uhuru was the same one used by the first President, Jomo Kenyatta, at his own swearing-in at Independence.

The crowds chanted ” Si uchawi, ni maombi ” and responded “Yes, Sir,” after every phrase as the President took a vow.

Deputy President William Ruto, similarly took an Oath before a crowd of over 60,000 that filled the stadium.

Presidents Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Edgar Lungu (Zambia), Salva Kiir Mayardit (South Sudan), Ismaïl Omar Guelleh Muhammed (Djibouti),Ian Khama (Botswana), Ali Bongo Ondimba (Gabon),Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) Hage Geingob (Namibia), Abdullahi Farmajo (Somalia), Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Guinea’s Prime Minister Mamady Youla attended the ceremony.

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria was represented at by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Former President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete and ex-Prime Minister Edward Lowassa also witnessed installation of the two leaders.
