Matiang'i Declares Tuesday a Public Holiday

The government has declared Tuesday, November 28th as a public holiday to allow for the swearing-in of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto for the second term in office.

In a special gazette notice, acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i stated the declaration of Tuesday as a public holiday was in accordance with the stipulations of section 12 of the Assumption of office of the President Act 2012.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that in accordance to the provisions of section 12 (3) of the Assumption of the office of the President Act 2012, Tuesday the 28th November 2017 shall be a public holiday,” he stated.

Preparations for the fete have gained momentum at Safaricom Kasarani stadium, which is expected to host about 100,000 people for the event.

Speaking during a media briefing at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) on Thursday, government spokesperson Erick Kiraithe said that over 20 heads of state are expected to attend the ceremony.

President Uhuru won the October 26th repeat presidential election with 7.5 million votes in a poll boycotted by his main rival Raila Odinga of National Super Alliance (NASA).
