Nema Shuts Down Oyster Bay Club in Kilimani over Noise Pollution

The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) has shut down the popular Oyster Bay bar and restaurant in Nairobi’s Kilimani area following complaints of noise pollution.

The agency said the entertainment joint located on Ndemi Road was playing extremely loud music that interferes with the comfort, health, and safety of area residents.

Nema Director General Mamo Boru noted that the club’s management disregarded previous improvement notices, adding that the joint has continued operations without a valid license.

“Enforcement actions have been taken including issuing of improvement notices, arrests, confiscation of sound-amplifying equipment and prosecution at the City’s Court,” Boru said in a shutdown notice to the club on Friday.

“The last joint operation undertaken at your facility by a team of Gazetted Environmental Inspectors from NEMA in collaboration with county officials issued an improvement notice for all operations to cease at the facility till all remedial actions stated in the notice are complied with but this also yielded no results and you have continued to operate unreservedly.”

As a result, Nema ordered the club to cease operations with immediate effect until it complies with the provisions of the Environment Management Act and the Environmental Management and Coordination Regulations.

Boru pointed out that Oyster Bay’s management has the right to appeal against the decision to the National Environmental Tribunal.
