Kalonzo’s Security Hasn’t Been Withdrawn, Police Inspector General Joseph Boinett Says

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett has dismissed claims that the government has withdrawn security details assigned to National Super Alliance (NASA) running mate Kalonzo Musyoka.

In a statement to the media by spokesperson George Kinoti, the Inspector General said that the government had only carried out ‘rationalization’ of the number officers attached to VIPs after the August election.

“Our attention has been drawn to statements by certain politicians to the effect that police officers attached to them to provide security have been withdrawn. We wish to inform the public that following the August 8 general elections in which a number of Members of Parliament lost their seats, it became imperative to rationalize the number of Police officers deployed on VIP security duties,” said IG Boinett.

Boinett said the rationalization exercise had been completed and leaders entitled to VIP protection have had bodyguards assigned to them as recommended by the National Security Advisory Committee.

Im the weekend, Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka, alleged that his remaining security officers had been given notice to end their services to him at his residence.

“Today, the other two officers attached to me have been notified to report back to their stations a week after recalling officers who were moving around with me. I want to tell Jubilee that whichever dubious means they will use against us, NASA, we will not refrain from advocating for reforms in the country,” said Kalonzo.

This was the second time the former Vice President raised alarm over ‘withdrawal’ of his security, after claiming that five officers attached to him had been recalled moments after the opposition announced their weekly anti IEBC protests in Nairobi.
