Former Meru Governor Peter Munya Ditches NASA Days after Joining

Former Meru Governor Peter Munya has backtracked his earlier defection to Opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) by declaring support for President Uhuru Kenyatta in the October 17th repeat presidential polls.

In a statement issued by his Party of National Unity (PNU), Munya said the party has resolved to now support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election during the fresh presidential election, putting to an end his short-lived dalliance with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga-led opposition.

“After thorough consultations with party members, elders and supporters across the country, it has been agreed that in the very best interest of the country, we support the re-election of His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta in the forthcoming presidential election,” the letter signed by Munya, Secretary General John Okemwa and Treasurer Peter Nkubitu said.

The party further called on all members and supporters to campaign and vote for President Kenyatta in the forthcoming presidential contest.

Munya, who lost to Jubilee’s Kiraitu Murungi in the August 8th poll, joined opposition outfit NASA barely a week ago. The former Governor held a number of campaign rallies to sell NASA in Tigania and Igembe over the past few days. However, he got a mixed reception, with sections of the crowds shouting pro-Jubilee slogans.

“Met with Jubilee-affiliate PNU chairman Peter Munya and other officials. The former Meru Governor pledged that he and PNU would give me their support in the Oct 17 repeat elections, after consultations with party loyalists,” President Uhuru said in a statement on his Facebook page.
