President Kenyatta has congratulated his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election.

In a statement, Kenyatta says Buhari’s re-election is an indication of the trust and confidence Nigerians have in his leadership.

He has pledged to continue working with him ahead of his second four-year term at the helm of the West Africa country.

“Kenya and Nigeria enjoy longstanding cordial relations and strong cooperation in many areas. I look forward to continuing working closely with Your Excellency to in consolidating these mutually beneficial areas of cooperation for the greater good of our two countries,” reads the statement.

“Accept, Your Excellency and Dear Brother, my renewed assurance of close cooperation of the Republic of Kenya and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The 76-year-old garnered 15.2 million votes (56 percent) ahead of his closest rival, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who got 11.3 million votes.

The turnout, based on valid votes, was 33.2 percent.

Nigeria’s opposition has dismissed the election results claiming that the elections were marred with irregularities.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and most populous country.
