Former nominated Senator Beatrice Elachi has been elected as the new Speaker of Nairobi County Assembly.
Elachi clinched the coveted seat after garnering 90 votes ahead of her main challenger Ali Abdi, who managed 27 votes while the third candidate got 4 votes.
Elachi contested for Dagoretti North constituency parliamentary seat in the August 8th elections on a Jubilee ticket, but lost to Orange Democratic Movement’s Simba Arati.
Elachi was being fronted by President Uhuru’s party, which commands a majority of seats in the Nairobi County Assembly, while the opposition fielded Abdi Ali.
Elachi’s election is seen as a major boost to new Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko as far as driving his agenda is concerned.
