A group of Kenyan students who are currently stuck in China’s Wuhan city following the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) have released a video crying for help.
Wuhan, located in Hubei province, is the epicenter of the deadly virus that has so far claimed the lives of close to 2,000 people and is on lockdown.
In a video recording posted on social media, a group of Kenyan students wearing masks are heard pleading with the government to evacuate them from the city. One of them says she has a condition that needs medical attention but the coronavirus situation has made it impossible for her to visit the hospital.
“Some of us have medical conditions that need frequent medical attention, but the outbreak has made it impossible to get out,” she says.
Each student who speaks in the video says the situation had become unbearable as they plead with the Kenyan government to take them back home.
“I am pleading with the Kenyan government to move swiftly to evacuate us because we’re currently on total lockdown,” a male student says.
On Sunday, Kenyan Ambassador to China Sarah Serem admitted she is worried about the safety of 100 students trapped in Wuhan.
“Going through the daily updates on the impact of coronavirus pandemic, reading the number of infections, the number of deaths, those in critical condition and in Wuhan, where we have close to 100 students, sends a chill down my spine,” said Serem.
More than 70,000 people have contracted the virus globally, with about 10,000 of them getting healed.
The first case of COVID-19 in Africa was reported in Egypt on Friday after a foreigner whose nationality was not revealed tested positive for the virus.
Last month, Kenya Airways suspended flights to Guangzhou, China to avoid the risk of spreading the virus to the country and region.
