The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has implemented measures to address the urgent plea of Kenyan citizens seeking employment opportunities abroad.
Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua yesterday emphasized the importance of protecting innocent individuals from fraudulent agencies and agents. He said the ministry has discovered numerous job prospects overseas through ongoing discussions with various countries. To combat misleading websites claiming to offer employment in countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and others, Dr. Mutua reiterated the importance of Kazi Majuu. According to Mutua, the platform will provide verified job links from all around the world.
He remarked that before Kenyans apply for positions in Australia, the UK, Canada, Sweden, or any other country, it is imperative they visit the platform and verify the legitimacy of the job opportunities available for Kenyans overseas. The government aims to ensure that Kenyans abroad are protected from fraud and negligence by implementing the use of the platform. This will allow Kenyans seeking jobs abroad to verify the legitimacy of companies before making any financial transactions. In the event of any losses, individuals can seek assistance from the government to recover their money without delay.
The CS lauded Kenyans living abroad for remitting significant amounts of money back home, with cumulative inflows for the 12 months to July 2023 totalling $4,076 million compared to $3,995 million in the same period in 2022, an increase of two per cent.
Meanwhile, the decision to implement the Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) for passport issuance comes as a response to the rising number of Kenyans being scammed by agencies promising lucrative job opportunities abroad. The RRI system has been in operation since September 25 and will continue for the next 30 days. The Immigration Department has scheduled to release a weekly list of applicants who can collect their passports.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki recently announced that the government is considering taking action against individuals who do not collect their passports within the designated timeframe. Additionally, he emphasized the ministry’s commitment to reducing service delivery time to just seven days within the next two months. To achieve this, the implementation of the RRI system will not only expedite passport issuance but also alleviate long queues at immigration offices.
Kindiki previously identified corruption, limited resources, and delays in passport processing as the main factors contributing to the backlog. Assuring the public that he would address this issue, he has since made several unannounced visits to Nyayo House to motivate staff members and has implemented double working shifts to expedite the process. He has also taken action against individuals suspected of accepting bribes.
