US Moves its Somalia Embassy from Nairobi to Mogadishu

The United States has finally relocated its Somalia Embassy from Nairobi to Mogadishu.

The US reopened its Embassy in Mogadishu on Wednesday, close to 30 years after it closed it following the break out of a civil war in the Horn of Africa country.

In a statement, the American Embassy in Somalia said its reopening followed the establishment of a permanent diplomatic presence in Mogadishu last year.

“The United States is proud to announce the reestablishment of the United States Embassy in #Mogadishu.”

“[It] is another step forward in the resumption of regular US-Somalia relations, symbolizing the strengthening of US-Somalia relations and advancement of stability, development, and peace for Somalia, and the region,” the statement read.

The US ambassador to Somalia Donald Yamamoto termed the reopening of the embassy as historic, adding that it was a step forward in regularizing US diplomatic engagement in Mogadishu.

The US first re-opened its diplomatic mission to Somalia in Nairobi in 2015 and its staff has been operating from the Kenyan capital.

The US is Somalia’s leading donor, giving $730m worth of aid in 2018; Reuters reported quoting an official at the US State Department.

The US has been helping the Somali Federal Government in the fight against the Islamist militant group, al-Shabab who want to overthrow the UN-recognized government.
