Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor Shatters World Half-Marathon Record

Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor is the new world record holder for fastest run Half-Marathon by a male athlete.

Kamworor clocked 58:01 on Sunday to win the Copenhagen Half-Marathon, breaking the previous world record held by his compatriot Abraham Kiptum. Kiptum set the record in Valencia last year after crossing the finish line in 58 minutes, 18 seconds.

This was 26-year-old Kamworor’s first 13.1-mile race since November 2014 and is now eying victory at New York Marathon on November 3rd.

Another Kenyan, Bernard Kipkorir came second in Sunday’s International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Gold Label road race, finishing in 59:16 while Ethiopia’s Berehanu Wendemu Tsegu settled for bronze in 59:22.

2018 Tokyo Marathon champion Birhane Dibaba Adugna of Ethiopia won the women’s race in 1:05:57, shedding about two minutes off her previous personal best.

Congratulations Geoff. Last week Brigid Kosgey did same thing for the women’s half marathon. Way to go Kenya.
However, after so much talk of doping, and more than 45 Kenyans, some of them high profile world class runners caught in dope scandals, I read each success with trepidation. I just hope that not bad doping story will follow to spoil this brilliance. That’s what happens when our good name is tainted by dopers.
If we really appreciate, admire, and love our athletes, its time to show support. Kenya trials for selecting Doha representatives ended last weekend. What shocked me is the empty seats for such a glorious event show casing word beaters. If we cannot show support by attending free events, how else are we supposed to support them.I am sure wananchi will not donate cash rewards-could be wrong.Have we been spoiled by our athletic success?
Brigid Kosgey so far the hottest /best female marathoner in the world has openly said that she is ready to run for any country that will compensate her well. Why shouldn’t Kwamoror do same? Time to show our love for our great athletes.
The starting point is to take care of them financially, while active and when they retire. These are our national HEROES and HEROINES,not to mention our good ambassadors. Secondly, their allowances should not be something they have to chase around each time they represent the country.Thirdly, we should criminalize doping. It is a form of corruption. My two cents.

  2. Kamworor congratulations!!!…
