President Uhuru Kenyatta has said his administration will not allow foreigners to take advantage of Kenya’s hospitality.
The president defended the recent crackdown on illegal immigrants and enforcement of tough rules in the issuance of work permits to foreign nationals.
Uhuru noted that recruitment of foreign workers and terms of service must adhere to Kenyan laws and interests of the country.
“We have had instances where visitors take advantage of Kenya’s hospitality and therefore, we had to register foreigners afresh. New vigour has also been applied in handling of renewal of permits,” he said, adding that the government will not relax stringent rules on foreign workers.
President Kenyatta spoke during the official opening of the new World Vision East Africa regional headquarters in Karen, Nairobi.
He was reacting to World Vision’s Vice President for East Africa Stephen Omollo, who appealed for leniency as majority of their employees were stranded waiting for their permits to be renewed.
“Whenever we are in a country we must make sure we operate according to the local laws and the laws here are clear, we must get work permits,” the President added.
He assured that the process for issuance of permits to World Vision staff would be expedited due to the nature of their work.
He named Anglican Church of Kenya Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, Supreme Court Justice Isaac Lenaola, Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok, Kajiado East MP Peris Tobiko and former MP Lina Jebii Kilimo as some of the Kenyans who benefitted from World Vision programs.
