Details of how fraudsters are conning unsuspecting Kenyans of their hard-earned cash using First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s name have emerged.
Conmen have created several pseudo-Facebook accounts using the name of Mrs. Kenyatta and are using them to defraud innocent youths.
A search on the social media network shows there are more than five parody Facebook accounts bearing the name of Mrs. Kenyatta and which are being operated by criminals.
The impersonators are using the accounts to run projects that are purportedly meant to empower youth and women to start their own businesses.
For instance, one of the accounts claims that the First Lady is dishing out motorcycle and tuk-tuks to youths as a way of creating employment opportunities for them.
Youths seeking to be given the motorbikes under the project are asked to pay Sh3,500 as ‘logbook transfer fee’ once they call a phone number provided in the fake account.
The Director of Digital, Innovations and Diaspora Communications at State House Dennis Itumbi says the accounts are fake and Mrs. Kenyatta doesn’t run such projects.
Itumbi has cautioned Kenyans not to fall victims to the fraudsters claiming to represent Mrs. Kenyatta.
Last month, Deputy President William Ruto’s wife, Rachel exposed a Facebook page run by fraudsters using her name.
The page claimed that Mrs. Ruto was running a competition to give free vehicles to Kenyans.
“The page is a hoax, do not send any money or your personal information to anyone,” Racheal warned.
A suspect identified as Michael Mito was later arrested and charged in court for impersonating Mrs. Ruto on Facebook.
