Nairobi, Kiambu Lead in Number of Gay Men in Kenya

Nairobi, Kiambu, Kisumu and Mombasa are the four Kenyan counties with the highest number of gay men in the country, a new report shows.

A Virtual Mapping survey carried out by Kenya’s National Aids and STI Control Council (Nascop) in collaboration with Canada’s University of Manitoba between June and July shows that the four counties have a total of 17,000 gay men.

The report says Nairobi and Kiambu have the highest number of the group, otherwise referred to as men who have sex with men (MSM), standing at 11,000 and 3,635 respectively, followed by Kisumu (1,567) and Mombasa (1469).

Researchers selected the four counties for the study due to their high HIV prevalence rates, significant internet use and relative urbanity.

The number of gay men in Kenya is estimated to be more than 20,000, with HIV prevalence among this group standing at an alarming 18.2 percent.

“We are now able to reach a big number of a previously hidden group with HIV health care,” researchers say in the report.

  1. Areas PREVALENT with SINGLE…
Areas PREVALENT with SINGLE mothers are PRONE to Male homosexuality. This is Why women should stop Bragging of being Single mothers to Boys. Male kids do Need Father figures (for manly Guidance) with or without Child Support. Eti “I can do it by myself.” No you can’t (except raise Sissy boys). So sad.

    • You are ill informed because…
You are ill informed because majority of famous gay people in US had both parents and came from stable families. Let me put it to you that most women dream of having great and responsible men/husbands in their lives; but, when men fail to step up to the plate or are abusive, absent, whores, or abuses substances, that’s when women resort to be single mothers. I have 3 close male friends raised by single mothers and to me they are great men. The term sissy is also degarotary to women.

      • What’s is your “3 close…
What’s is your “3 close males” compared to the figures above? Peanuts; negligent; of No consequence, even Bs.

      • @XG it shows her “two…
@XG it shows her “two parents ” apparently didn’t hack it in parenting they way she argues here . I know many single parents who have produced great men and Women, maybe Iphone G should read more or meet people outside Mwakilishi more, she may broaden her horizon

    • Tell us of one famous gay…
Tell us of one famous gay man who was raised by a single mother????

    • What a stupid…
What a stupid unsubstantiated claim . Shows how ignorant you are sometimes. Single mothers come from in many forms and some married women raise their children alone even when they claim not to be single. Ugh stupid comments like these .
I presume the way you argue here your mother was single or your parents were just child bearers and never taught you some morals…. – two parents would never have raised someone as thoughtless as you are – that is how I view people with such hate and uncouth language/behaviour – mic drop!

  2. Why is a foreignor doing…
Why is a foreignor doing such a study in our country? What is their “Self Interest in this”. After 50 years of independence we do not have people who can do such study. Only foreignors can tell us who we are and what is happening to us. We need to scrap off any education being taught to our people in relation to statistics and math. Very interesting. After 50 years only colonizers know who we are and what we ought to be. ” Any education that does not take into consideration the inseparable unity between the African lineage and African thinking is based on false principles and must lead to alienation of the individual from his own self, his principles and his past”. Wrong education has led to our alienation from what ought to be important to us and are more interested in what is important to others without questioning why.
God give Kenya leaders not politicians. God help Kenya!!!

Why will you use tires on Kiambu gay men? How is it your problem that they have chosen to be gay? As long as they are not “entering” through your “exit”…….let them be.

  4. Guest 1 you are what…
Guest 1 you are what Jamaicans refer to as Battiman. Your reasoning capacity is so low, what do you gain by diminishing another group. So single mothers create homosexuality all over the world huh? Hiyo doze ya bangi umevuta ongeza ingine kaa mbili hivi. You probably hail from Central Kenya na kwa sababu you couldn’t attack the homosexuals tribally you decided to go with gender. All in all, I’m glad that such studies are being conducted and we can now deal with issues based on facts and not speculation. That “Hollier than thou” Kenyans especially our leaders portray is making many people die for fear of victimization. Whether you like it or not, modus operandi within any society changes over time. We can’t expect to achieve vision 2030 or Blue Economy or whatever goals we set for ourselves without realizing that all this will and MUST be achieved by people from all facets of life. You simply cannot choose who to work with. Watu mumekuja huku US or wherever in the diaspora but akili ni uji tu! Heri mtu abaki kwa village yao na mentality zingine za kiupuzi. Ati single mothers, Guest 1 you are so pathetic. Heri wewe ulizaliwa na both parents na madada zako wote wameolewa na hauna anyone you care about who happens to be a single mother. Mbona sisi tumelelewa na single mothers hatuna kasoro. You ought to be very ashamed of yourself. Guest 1 kwanza nakushuku sana wewe! Nyinyi ndio mnajifanya hapa halafu mnapatikana mmekamatana kama doggy, side B na mwanamme mwenzako nkt

  5. Only GOD is for Sure holier…
Only GOD is for Sure holier than Thou. Not me. Anyway: You keep on Replacing fatherhood with NIKES, Video games, Gifts, fast foods, Rotating doors (for every Tom and Dick) and see how far you go your Single parenthood.?

  6. Eti “Mbona sisi tumelelewa…
Eti “Mbona sisi tumelelewa na single mothers hatuna kasoro.” Because: It’s possible you had Male father-figures around you like Uncles or your Mom’s boyfriends. Or you’re just in the “Down-low”.

  7. Eti “nakushuku sana wewe!”…
Eti “nakushuku sana wewe!” Keep on DREAMING your wishful thinking; and Defending your Doggy lifestyle. I
And just FYI: I would Strangle Shoga (in a minute) if given Legal right do so.

  8. Guest 1 FYI I’m very happily…
Guest 1 FYI I’m very happily married with a partner of the opposite sex. And that Never absolutely, Does not give me any right to attack single mothers. Something must’ve happened throughout your life or a some point in your life hautuambii. Either way I won’t victimize you. But it’s really strange coming out strong attacking an already vulnerable group in our society- single mothers. Actually two vulnerable groups the LGBTQ community. You and your homophobic sentiments. Afadhali hivyo this is a forum that doesn’t reveal our real persona. I know people who’ve been born and bred in the village who would never associate single mothers to LGBTQ. I would just like to imagine that you have some sort of education and exposure.

    • someone should tell Guest1…
someone should tell Guest1 there are various way one can become a single mother in an instant through fault of no one = death of a spouse – that touches very close to home….so hata mimi amefanya nikasirike kiasi with such short shortsightedness!

  9. Iyo ya kiambu is good news…
Iyo ya kiambu is good news for the livestock, they can finally get a reprieve from the constant pounding. Mbuzi na kuku washerekee kabisa!!!

  10. Before Africa was colonized…
Before Africa was colonized by foreign religious zealots being gay was a non-issue. In North America the natives revered the ‘third’ sex. If your religion teaches you hatred then you can hardly call yourself religious.

In the Buganda Kingdom, part of modern-day Uganda, King Mwanga II was openly gay and faced no hate from his subjects until white men brought the Christian church and its condemnation. Though King Mwanga is the most prominent African recorded as being openly gay, he was not alone.
