On December 3, Frank Fitzgibbon, an 83-year-old resident of Fountainstown, Ireland, will take a bold plunge into the icy Atlantic Ocean to raise funds for Brighter Communities Worldwide.
The charity focused on improving the quality of life for people in Kenya. The initiative is aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities. Fitzgibbon, undeterred by the forecast of chilly December weather, notes his commitment to the cause, stating, “I am an OV8: Over Bloody 80. So I am just happy to be able to do what I can while I can for the wonderful charity that Brighter Communities Worldwide is.”
His unique fundraising approach involves immersing himself in the ocean for one minute for every five euros contributed to the campaign. He calls on the public to support the initiative, asserting that “Every single donation, no matter what size, really makes a difference.” His relationship with Brighter Communities Worldwide has deep roots. Fitzgibbon began supporting the organization through the Harambee program which enables self-help fundraising events in Kenya.
He notes the lasting impact of his previous volunteer work, saying, “I saw firsthand the incredible work it does across economic, health, education, and environmental projects. It is a truly fantastic small charity, and I was so taken by the partnership model it works through and the fact that the funding goes to those who need it most.” This year’s fundraising campaign, in particular, aims to mitigate challenges posed by the climate crisis faced by Kenyan communities.
Fitzgibbon highlighted the ongoing adversities these populations endure, stating, “It empowers people to develop life skills that will help to make lasting improvements for their lives. This year its campaign will focus on the impact of the climate crisis in Kenya. The communities it works with experience this daily, affecting their health, livelihoods, and their ability to provide food for their families.”
Brighter Communities Worldwide boasts a track record of successful initiatives, having previously raised funds for numerous projects that benefit Kenyan communities. This year, the charity’s co-founders report that their efforts have positively impacted nearly 2 million people in Kericho County, Kenya.
