Former Limuru Member of Parliament Peter Mwathi has shared details regarding the distressing circumstances that led to his abduction during a disrupted funeral service on November 28, 2024.
The incident also involved former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and resulted in damage to Gachagua’s vehicle amid escalating tensions. In a press conference alongside Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Mwathi recounts the events surrounding his abduction, asserting that he was forcibly taken by individuals he suspected to be detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He says that the encounter occurred as he and an assistant attempted to escape the chaos that erupted in Naivasha. Their exit was obstructed by two Subaru vehicles, one black and one green, operated by hooded men armed with shotguns who forcibly compelled him into one of the cars.
Describing the incident, Mwathi details how his captors ordered him to look at the shotguns they were brandishing. He reports that before his kidnapping, youth in the area had pursued him with the intent to harm, prompting him to run approximately two kilometres to escape. Armed with machetes, pangas, and rungus, the attackers escalated the sense of danger surrounding the situation. Following several hours of alleged torture and questioning, Mwathi was abandoned along the Southern Bypass in Nairobi. The alarming nature of this incident has raised concerns regarding the potential involvement of unauthorized abduction squads operating within the police force.
Musyoka condemns the actions of the state, alleging state-sponsored operations and refuting claims from the Inspector General of Police that denied the police’s involvement in Mwathi’s kidnapping. Musyoka further criticizes the use of vehicles funded by taxpayers for illicit operations, demanding accountability for such actions and asserting that denials from law enforcement entities would not assuage public scepticism. Gachagua recently alleged that the government is responsible for the violent incident during a funeral in Limuru where mourners were attacked by suspected goons.
Gachagua, who attended the funeral of Erastus Nduati, reported that he was followed to his car and pelted with stones and iron bars by a group armed with machetes and sticks. He condemned the attack as indicative of a troubling state of affairs, expressing that such violence should never be repeated. He further noted that he was forcefully driven from the event while families mourned the loss of their loved one. He revealed that this attack occurred shortly after the government withdrew his security, which he argues leaves him vulnerable to such aggression.
