Ten students from Kenyan universities were recently chosen as finalists in the Huawei-sponsored LEAP Digital Talent Study Camp, held in Shenzhen, China.
The camp served as a dynamic platform for emerging technological talent, providing participants with comprehensive exposure to cutting-edge digital innovations. Among the standout achievements was the development of “Mafreeco,” an ingenious technological solution derived from the Swahili term “Mafuriko,” meaning floods. This sophisticated system addresses Kenya’s persistent flooding challenges by implementing advanced mechanisms for clearing drainage infrastructure of accumulated debris.
The Mafreeco team’s technical prowess secured their participation in the Tech4Good finals where they competed alongside formidable teams from South Africa, Mauritius, and Malawi. Team member Ashley Yigo emphasizes the extraordinary learning experience and unparalleled networking opportunities. The week-long intensive program ehich started on November 17 included rigorous educational modules spanning 5G and 5.5G technologies, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and leadership development.
“It was an invaluable experience, gaining global insights into technology and networking. It was also great to meet other students from around the continent,” Yigo says.
The culminating Tech4Good competition challenged Sub-Saharan African teams to develop technological solutions addressing critical societal challenges. Beyond technical instruction, the camp facilitated meaningful cultural exchanges, enabling collaborative relationships and regional understanding. Launched in 2022, Huawei’s LEAP Digital Talent Study Camp represents a strategic initiative to cultivate a technologically proficient workforce across the African continent.
The program’s comprehensive approach aims to inspire a new generation of innovators capable of leveraging modern technologies to drive socioeconomic transformation.
