Kikuyu elders gathered in Nyeri on Friday to advocate for Mutahi Kagwe’s inclusion in President William Ruto’s administration.
The elders expressed concern over the lack of Cabinet representation from the Nyeri region and unanimously endorsed the former Health Cabinet Secretary for a position in the Kenya Kwanza government. The assembly particularly emphasized Kagwe’s distinguished public service career, which includes serving as Health CS during Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency and as Communications Minister under the late President Mwai Kibaki.
Their endorsement specifically points to the Interior Cabinet Secretary position, currently under the temporary stewardship of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. This interim arrangement emerged following a series of high-level changes that saw Prof. Kithure Kindiki elevated to Deputy President after Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment. The timing of this endorsement coincides with anticipated Cabinet restructuring by President Ruto, who seeks to enhance both governance efficiency and regional representation within his administration.
The elders’ strong backing of Kagwe stems from their conviction that his leadership would serve both regional and national interests effectively. As one elder articulated, Kagwe’s appointment would address the current representation gap while ensuring their community’s interests receive proper attention at the national level. Kagwe’s credentials are particularly noteworthy, given his instrumental role in managing Kenya’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic during his tenure as Health Minister.
His extensive experience, which includes service as a senator, has equipped him with valuable insights into national politics and governance. These qualities, the elders argue, make him exceptionally qualified to handle the complex responsibilities of the Interior Ministry. While their support for Kagwe is unequivocal, the final decision lies with President Ruto, who must weigh various factors including administrative efficiency, regional balance, and national cohesion.
On November 3, Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma advocated for a Luo community member to be appointed as Interior Cabinet Secretary. While Environment CS Aden Duale and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah have emerged as potential candidates, Ichung’wah has expressed his commitment to his parliamentary role. Claims about ODM’s Suna East MP Junet Mohamed being considered for the position were recently refuted by Mohamed himself, who clarified that neither he nor the ODM party is seeking representation in the Kenya Kwanza administration.
