Lawyer-turned-activist Morara Kebaso was arrested by police officers on Monday after a raid at his main office in Kahawa Sukari, Nairobi.
Known for his ardent advocacy of government accountability and civil rights, Kebaso’s detention has raised concerns about the state of law enforcement and civil liberties in Kenya. The circumstances surrounding Kebaso’s arrest remain shrouded in ambiguity, with authorities yet to disclose the specific reasons for his detention. Attempts by Kebaso’s legal team to gain access to their client have been thwarted, as police at the Nairobi Regional Headquarters have reportedly received orders from high-ranking officials to restrict all visitation.
This lack of transparency has further fueled suspicions and criticism regarding the motives behind the arrest. The incident has ignited a firestorm of debate on social media platforms, with many Kenyans characterizing Kebaso’s detention as an “abduction.” Eyewitness accounts of a Subaru Forester involved in the arrest, corroborated by video footage showing the vehicle on the Thika Superhighway shortly after the incident, have lent credence to these allegations. Just hours before his own detention, Kebaso had publicly decried the reported abduction and torture of Bruce John, a Mombasa-based blogger.
According to Kebaso’s account, John was subjected to severe mistreatment including sexual assault by a group claiming to act on behalf of the Mombasa Governor. This incident had prompted Kebaso to challenge the Inspector General of Police to address accusations of complicity and to call for an investigation into the governor’s potential involvement. The activist’s final social media update before his arrest hinted at his readiness to escalate his protest efforts, threatening to suspend all activities in favor of nationwide demonstrations if his demands for justice were not met.
This statement, viewed in light of his subsequent arrest, has intensified speculation about potential retribution for his outspoken activism. In response to Kebaso’s detention, a grassroots movement has rapidly coalesced on social media under the hashtag #FreeMorara. Supporters contend that his detention reflects a wider trend of curtailing freedom of speech and political opposition in Kenya. Meanwhile, Former Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been apprehended by authorities allegedly for inciting violence. The incident occurred on the Northern Bypass in Kiambu, with Waititu being transported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for questioning.
The arrest is purportedly linked to comments Waititu made during a recent church service, suggesting that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should leave office alongside President William Ruto if impeached. This development follows a series of setbacks for Waititu and other opposition figures, including denied entry to a church in Kitengela and the cancellation of planned rallies due to security concerns. The situation has escalated rapidly, with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka taking swift action in response to what he describes as Waititu’s abduction by suspected State Security agents.
The sad days of the late…
The sad days of the late Toroitich Kabon Moi are back in our republic with vengeance under the leadership of Samoei Cherop Ruto.
Thank you Ndugu Uhuru Ngina Kamau for warning the people of Kenya against voting for the current occupant of our State House.
Let’s remind anyone receiving his or her monthly paycheck from the Kenyan Government that, they are our “SERVANTS” but not our “bosses.”
The late Frank Herbert was right when he said that, “Power attracts pathological personalities.” In addition, the late British historian Lord Acton made this famous observation: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
It is time we the people cremate the idea that a normal human being can be above the law. No constitution anywhere in the world should entertain the notion of an elected public servant being showered with the notion that s/he is above the law.
In conclusion, I would like to honor and thank the first indigenous President of South COHO (continent of human beings) the late Ndugu Rolihlahla Madiba Mandela for serving for only one term in office and retiring permanently after being imprisoned by the illegal European immigrants in South COHO for a period of 27 years in his land of ancestry.
It’s time that Samoei is impeached for lying to the people of Kenya in order to be elected. A lie should be treated like a “crime against the people” and classified as a FELON. Since lies made it possible for him to be elected, he (not Muruthi Rigathi) should be impeached immediately.
