Babu Owino: I'm Ready to Lead Opposition, Raila Remains My Mentor
ODM Leader Raila Odinga and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has addressed questions surrounding his relationship with Azimio leader Raila Odinga following his self-declaration as the new opposition leader.

In a televised interview on TV47, Owino emphasized that Odinga remains his mentor and party leader, despite his own aspirations to eventually assume the role of opposition leader. Owino elaborated on his plans, stating that he intends to formally take over the position once Odinga becomes the new African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson. He defends his readiness for the role, dismissing concerns about his youth and political experience. Owino argues that experience is not solely a function of age, but rather of the challenges one has faced and overcome.

“Raila has been my political leader and I respect him so much, I have worked under him, for him and with him and he is still my leader. Raila has tried his best for this nation, he has fought for the nation regardless of what people might say we cannot wish away what Raila has done for this nation,” The MP clarified.

The MP’s declaration of himself as the opposition leader has been framed as a preparatory step towards officially assuming the mantle from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader. Owino expresses confidence in his ability to handle Odinga’s responsibilities, citing his own life experiences and the challenges he has surmounted. Owino’s announcement comes at a time when Odinga is vying for the position of AUC Chairperson, with elections scheduled for February of the following year. The Embakasi East MP has voiced his support for Odinga’s candidacy and his readiness to step into the opposition leadership role should Odinga secure the AUC position.

Despite facing criticism from some quarters regarding his political experience and readiness to lead the opposition, Owino has remained resolute in his belief that he is well-prepared for the role. He has emphasized his loyalty to Odinga, highlighting their close working relationship and the valuable lessons he has learned from the ODM leader. In addition to his political ambitions, Owino has been vocal in his criticism of the current government, which he describes as failing to meet the expectations of Kenyans. He has pledged to continue holding the government accountable and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard.
