Opposition leader Raila Odinga has disclosed the instrumental role played by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in fostering collaboration between him and President William Ruto during Kenya’s Gen Z revolution.
Speaking on Monday at a funeral service, Odinga explained that Kenyatta had initiated discussions aimed at addressing the concerns raised by Kenya’s youth, particularly in the wake of recent anti-government demonstrations. Odinga recounts how Kenyatta reached out to him when the country was in turmoil, urging him to engage with President Ruto to find solutions to the issues raised by the Gen Z population. While Odinga participated in these discussions, he has emphasised that his involvement did not extend to joining the government structure.
“Uhuru told me that I should talk to Ruto because if the country went down, then we have no other country,” Raila said.
He clarifies that there was no agreement to form a coalition government with President Ruto, but rather, he had assisted in identifying individuals from his faction to serve in the administration at Ruto’s request. These comments come amid widespread speculation about the nature of the relationship between Odinga and Ruto, particularly following the appointment of key opposition leaders to prominent government positions. Odinga’s remarks suggest that the collaboration was primarily focused on stabilizing the nation rather than forming a formal political alliance.
President Ruto’s appointments of several top ODM party members to cabinet positions have sparked debates about the future of opposition politics in Kenya. The President has defended these appointments as an effort to create a broad-based government that transcends political affiliations. However, Odinga’s clarification indicates that this collaboration does not signify a merger of political interests but rather a concerted effort to address immediate national concerns.
The Gen Z revolution, characterized by widespread protests and demands for improved governance, has been a significant force in shaping Kenya’s current political landscape. The youth have been vocal about issues such as unemployment, corruption, and economic instability. While some view the appointment of opposition figures to government positions as a strategic move towards inclusivity, others express concern about the potential impact on the independence of the opposition.

Politics is truly a dirty occupation. Raila knows he is now considered to be a msaliti and is concerned about the Gen Z and by linking Uhuru to the call, he is hoping to bring him out of retirement and into the political arena.
