Azimio's Future in Question as Orengo Pushes for ODM Dominance
Siaya Governor James Orengo

Siaya Governor James Orengo has firmly declared that the next leader of the Azimio la Umoja coalition must come from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

This declaration has ignited crucial discussions within the alliance regarding leadership succession and the key role of ODM. Orengo’s stance is rooted in his belief that ODM, as the largest stakeholder in the coalition, should be reflected in the leadership. He argues that this principle is enshrined not only in the coalition’s standing orders but also in its foundational instruments. Orengo elaborates on the coalition’s internal regulations which he claims underscore ODM’s preeminence within the alliance.

“The next Azimio party leader is subject to discussion. However, it must reflect the strength of the party within the outfit,” Orengo emphasizes.

The governor points to the allocation of seats in both the National Assembly and the Senate as evidence of ODM’s dominant position. He notes that the party has consistently secured key positions in the National Assembly leadership, and recent cabinet appointments have further reinforced ODM’s influence. This assertion, however, has placed other Azimio co-principals in a shaky position, particularly in light of recent developments involving President William Ruto’s government.

The nomination of several ODM leaders to cabinet positions by President Ruto has sparked controversy within the coalition. Azimio affiliate parties, including PNU, Jubilee, and DAP-K, have voiced their discontent with ODM’s actions, accusing the party of duplicity and calling for its expulsion from the coalition. These parties argue that ODM’s apparent collaboration with the government undermines the coalition’s role as an opposition force.

Adding to the complexity of the situation is Raila Odinga’s bid for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission. Should Odinga succeed in this endeavour, it would necessitate a reevaluation of the coalition’s leadership structure. Orengo’s remarks suggest that even in such a scenario, ODM should maintain its dominant position within Azimio la Umoja.
