Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly rejected assertions that his political relevance is dependent on Raila Odinga’s influence.
Speaking at a funeral in Machakos on Thursday, Musyoka emphasized that his political prominence predated his alliance with the former Prime Minister. He addressed rumours suggesting his current political stature is contingent on Odinga’s presence. Musyoka reaffirms his commitment to the opposition, making it clear that such criticisms would not sway him to join President William Ruto’s administration. He also takes issue with Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party for allowing some of its members to take positions in Ruto’s cabinet while ostensibly remaining in opposition.
Musyoka notes that while ODM has attempted to explain this situation, they would face further scrutiny. He reiterates that his party has no intention of joining Ruto’s government, though he wishes them well. These comments follow a meeting between Musyoka, Odinga, and other Azimio coalition leaders, including Jeremiah Kioni of Jubilee and Gideon Moi of KANU. The gathering reportedly focused on addressing challenges facing the coalition’s political progress. Musyoka reveals that Odinga had convened the meeting to elucidate the circumstances surrounding the nomination of four ODM leaders to government positions.
He clarifies that the widely circulated image of the meeting on social media was simply a record of this explanation. Musyoka’s political career spans several decades, marked by significant achievements. He served as Vice President from 2008 to 2013 under President Mwai Kibaki and has held various ministerial positions, including Foreign Affairs and Education. As the leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement, Musyoka has been a key figure in Kenyan politics since the 1980s. In recent years, Musyoka has emerged as a prominent opposition figure, particularly within the Azimio la Umoja coalition. Despite facing criticism, he has maintained his political stance and influence.
Under Musyoka’s leadership, the Wiper Democratic Movement is working to expand its influence beyond its traditional strongholds, targeting Nairobi County and coastal regions ahead of the 2027 General Election. His allies, including Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, have vocally supported his presidential ambitions.
