US Embassy Issues Alert for Planned Protests in Kenya

The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a travel advisory to American citizens ahead of planned demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday.

The advisory specifically highlights potential protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and other major urban centres. According to the Embassy, ongoing calls for demonstrations on these days are expected to impact central business districts and major roadways throughout Kenya, potentially resulting in road closures and traffic disruptions. While the protests are anticipated to be peaceful, the Embassy has expressed concern about the possibility of violence erupting.

As a precautionary measure, all Americans in Kenya have been advised to remain vigilant and be prepared for potential police checkpoints and travel disruptions on these days. The Embassy has strongly recommended that American citizens closely monitor local media for updates and carefully evaluate travel conditions before venturing out. They are also advised to avoid large gatherings, particularly during the demonstrations, and to take precautions such as keeping vehicle doors locked and windows closed to mitigate the risk of injury in case of any outbreaks of violence.

Furthermore, the Embassy has requested that US citizens in Kenya inform their friends and family of their whereabouts and safety status. American residents in Kenya are advised to carry their current US passport with a valid Kenyan visa in case they require assistance. They can seek help at the US Embassy in Nairobi or contact designated hotlines if needed. This marks the third advisory issued by the Embassy in the past month, following a series of tumultuous protests in the nation that resulted in fatalities and property damage.

The ongoing political instability in Kenya has prompted several other countries, including Russia, Finland, the United Kingdom, India, Canada, and Australia, to urge their nationals in the country to exercise caution. What began as youth-led demonstrations has now grown into a nationwide call for change, with social media playing a crucial role in amplifying the protesters’ voices.
