President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to addressing the critical issue of youth unemployment in the country.
During a recent press briefing at State House in Nairobi on Sunday, Ruto shared personal insights, revealing that even his own children have faced challenges in securing employment. The youth unemployment crisis in Kenya mirrors a global challenge, with millions of young Kenyans struggling to find work despite completing their education. President Ruto has acknowledged the gravity of this situation and emphasizes the necessity for immediate and purposeful action.
While the President’s children have pursued diverse career paths, including law, communication, and international relations, they have largely maintained a low public profile. Charlene Ruto, however, has gained recognition for her appointment as Kenya’s Blood Ambassador by the Ministry of Health. In a move to create opportunities for Kenyan youth, the government has finalized an agreement with Germany set to be officially signed in September. This deal aims to provide 250,000 positions annually for Kenyans in Germany, particularly in sectors such as driving and caregiving.
This international collaboration represents a concrete step towards addressing the unemployment crisis. Recognizing the evolving landscape of work and digital opportunities, President Ruto has also engaged with social media platforms to empower Kenyan youth. His direct outreach to TikTok’s leadership advocates for Kenyans to monetize their content on the platform, acknowledging that talent and career opportunities can flourish in non-traditional spaces.
To further equip young people with essential digital skills, the Kenyan government is establishing ICT hubs across the country. The government reports that these initiatives have already enabled 119,000 young individuals to access digital jobs. The President has encouraged those who have benefited from this training to mentor others, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and skill development.
