Prominent social media activist and political commentator Gabriel Oguda has been found safe after an abduction that occurred during the recent anti-Finance Bill protests.
The incident took place in Nairobi on June 24, 2024, sparking widespread concern and outrage among Kenyan citizens who demanded his immediate release. Oguda, known for his vocal criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, had reported late on June 24 that unidentified individuals were outside his gate, claiming to be police officers. His subsequent disappearance left family and friends in a state of desperation, searching for answers.
After more than 24 hours of uncertainty, Oguda was located at the Kajiado police station. A video obtained by the Star newspaper showed him in the company of friends and family members who had been tirelessly searching for him. Despite being found, Oguda remains in custody, awaiting his release. The incident prompted a significant social media outcry with the hashtag #FreeOguda trending across various platforms. This comes amid growing concerns about the safety of influencers and activists who face potential arbitrary detention for their roles in mobilizing public demonstrations.
Zachary Oguda, Gabriel’s brother, managed to track down the officers who had taken Gabriel to the Kajiado Town area and subsequently to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) holding facility. National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi has provided additional context to the events leading up to Oguda’s disappearance. According to Wandayi, Oguda had called him at 2 am, reporting that individuals were breaking into his compound. Shortly after this call, Oguda’s phone went silent and remained jammed until 6:30 am.
The identity of the alleged abductors remains unclear, adding to the complexity of the case. Wandayi expresses frustration over the arrest, emphasizing that Oguda’s expertise as an analyst is crucial, particularly in light of ongoing discussions surrounding the Finance Bill. The timing of his abduction has raised concerns about potential attempts to suppress dissenting voices during a critical period of policy debate in Kenya.
