US to Host Justified Accord 2025 in Kenya After Major Non-NATO Ally Status

The United States and Kenya have taken a significant step in solidifying their military partnership with the upcoming Justified Accord 2025 exercise.

This multinational endeavour, set to be hosted in Kenya, marks a key milestone in the strengthening of ties between the two nations, following the recent designation of Kenya as a major non-NATO ally by US President Joe Biden, a first for a sub-Saharan African country. The groundwork for this prestigious exercise was laid during a strategic planning conference held in Vicenza, Italy, from June 10-13. The conference brought together key military leaders and planners from Kenya, Italy, the United Kingdom, and The Netherlands, facilitated by the US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF).

This gathering served as a platform for discussions encompassing operational frameworks, resource allocation, and the development of training scenarios that mirror real-world security challenges. The Justified Accord 2025 exercise promises to be a grand display of military prowess and international cooperation. One of the highlights will be the multinational air-to-ground integration drill, which will take place at the Counter Insurgency, Terrorism and Stability Operations Centre (CITSO) in Nanyuki, Kenya. This drill involves partner nation forces controlling Kenyan air assets to support ground manoeuvres, testing and enhancing the critical coordination between air and ground units.

Mr Eldridge Browne, chief of exercises at SETAF-AF, emphasizes the importance of the initial planning event, stating, “The focus is on building a detailed plan that prioritizes interoperability, readiness, and ensuring everything is joint and combined since that is the way we will operate in a crisis.”

Kenya has previously hosted the Justified Accord 24 exercise, which concluded on March 7, 2024, involving 1,000 personnel from 23 different countries. This exercise mirrored Kenya’s growing importance as a strategic partner in regional security. The upcoming Justified Accord 2025 aims to build upon this foundation of international military cooperation, led by SETAF-AF and hosted in Kenya. The exercise’s primary objectives include building readiness for the US joint force, preparing regional partners for United Nations and African Union-mandated missions, and increasing multinational interoperability in support of humanitarian assistance, disaster response, and crisis response.

The US military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM) has already showcased protective equipment to the Kenya Defence Forces on January 30, 2024, demonstrating its commitment to equipping Kenyan forces with state-of-the-art gear for optimal performance during the exercise.
