President William Ruto has announced a series of key appointments and promotions in a move designed to revitalize the Kenyan military’s leadership.
The most notable change sees Lieutenant General Charles Muriu Kahariri assume the mantle of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). General Kahariri, previously the deputy commandant of the National Defence College, fills the vacancy left by the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of General Francis Ogolla. Alongside General Kahariri’s elevation, several other high-ranking officers have received promotions and new assignments. Former Kenya Air Force Commander Major General John Mugaravai Omenda has been promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed Vice Chief of Defence Forces.
This move is accompanied by a historic appointment with Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed becoming the first woman service commander in Kenya’s history, assuming leadership of the Kenya Air Force. The reshuffle extends to the Navy as well. Major General Thomas Ng’ang’a, the current Kenya Navy commander, will transition to an academic role as Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance at the National Defence University-Kenya. His vacated position will be filled by Major General Paul Owuor Otieno.
Promotions were also announced for several brigadiers. Brigadier Peter Nyamu Githinji is now a Major General and Senior Directing Staff for Air at the National Defence College. Brigadiers Jattani Kampare Gula and George Okumu have both been promoted to Major General. Following their promotions, Gula will head the Kenya Meat Commission, while Okumu will take charge of the Kenya Ordinance Factories Corporation and Food Processing Factory.
Continuity is also present within the new leadership structure. Lieutenant General Jimson Longiro Mutai, Lieutenant General David Kimaiyo Tarus, and Lieutenant General Juma Shee Mwinyikai will retain their current positions as Vice Chancellor of the National Defence University-Kenya, Kenya Army Commander, and Commandant of the National Defence College, respectively.
It is not often I see…
It is not often I see anything redeeming about Ruto’s qualities but on this one he is right on. Appointing women in high positions within the ranks is good for maintaining the command forces esprit de corps. The appointments also seem to reflect Kenyan’s demographics to a certain extent na hakuchagua wale watu wa “gugula” pekee lakini naona alichagua Brigadier Jattani Kampare “Gula”.
