Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismantled a cocaine smuggling ring that utilized a concerning method of concealment.
The operation unfolded after airport authorities at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) identified suspicious items hidden on a woman during a routine security check. The woman, who was attempting to board a flight to Madagascar, was apprehended upon discovery of 600 grams of the highly addictive drug concealed within her private area. Following a thorough investigation, the woman revealed details of a larger syndicate involving four other women.
According to her statement, she was recruited into the illegal activity by a Ugandan national residing in Kenya. The DCI’s swift action led to the arrest of the Ugandan suspect, who in turn provided information on a network of three Kenyan women disguised as businesswomen within Nairobi. The investigation revealed that the trio was directed to a specific salon on Accra Road, likely a pre-determined location for further instructions.
Authorities apprehended all three suspects, including a Ugandan citizen and two Kenyan women aged 24. Upon search, a total of 33 cocaine pellets, weighing approximately 396 grams, were found in their possession. Preliminary testing confirmed the presence of cocaine in both the initial seizure and the subsequent discovery. The DCI is currently collaborating with Interpol to identify and apprehend the intended recipients of the narcotics in Madagascar.
The DCI has issued a public appeal, urging citizens to report any suspected instances of drug smuggling and provide any relevant information pertaining to the illegal narcotics trade.
