Over the past 16 months, a total of 1,350 distressed individuals from Kenya have been successfully rescued from various unfortunate circumstances.
These situations range from kidnappings to cases of human trafficking. In a recent briefing, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura discussed the progress made in supporting Kenyans in these situations. Mwaura also emphasized the creation of a placement agency for Kenyans living abroad, aimed at helping them secure job prospects. This agency, overseen by the State Department for diaspora affairs, will now prioritize evacuation efforts alongside its existing duties.
According to Mwaura, approximately three million Kenyans presently reside in foreign nations. The United States has the largest community of Kenyans abroad, with 157,000 individuals. The United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia rank closely behind, accommodating 139,400 and 100,000 individuals, respectively. Nevertheless, Mwaura acknowledges that these figures are likely underestimated as not all Kenyans overseas are officially registered. In 2023, remittances from Kenyans in the diaspora played a crucial role in boosting the country’s economy.
Mwaura highlights the government’s desire to increase the number of people working abroad as evidenced by the 2,500 nurses heading to Saudi Arabia, despite the target being 350,000. Additionally, there is a need for 30,000 individuals in Israel, with the first group of 100 National Youth Service members being trained for the opportunity. Recently, the NYS announced 900 job openings in the Middle East, specifically in the United Arab Emirates.
The NYS emphasizes that graduates can find great job prospects in these positions. By joining a well-respected and prestigious international leader in the shipyard and maritime industry, graduates not only secure jobs but also have chances to showcase and improve their skills. The salary for these 900 positions ranges from Sh69,000 to Sh163,000.

I have noticed a trend since Ruto unduly assumed the presidency of the Republic of Kenya. There is a lot of talk about diasporans and empty promises of safeguarding our interests. Then there is that fellow Ochuodho, what does he really do?

Can Mwaura give us the name of one person living abroad who the government helped secure a job?? Has Kenya became a job hiring agency abroad?? Stop it Mwaura, please stop lying like a Devil!
They don’t even have a clue…

Let Kenya first give us a…
Let Kenya first give us a Balance Sheet of the pros and cons of Kenyans living abroad.
What about their mental destabilization due to foreign cultures.
What about families being split?
What about lack of progress for so many years before settling on unstable foreign grounds.
How about dealing with foreign languages, strange religions, strangers, discrimination and lack of support system.
Let us study all these and come up with ways of stabilizing our families at home.
Ways of bringing home the diasporians, and the wealth of knowledge they have acquired abroad.
Those in Diaspora must have acquired great knowledge that Kenya can tap into and join hands with the knowledge that our brothers and sisters have locally to build a future for Kenyans in Kenya.
Let every Kenyan who is abroad help their brother and sisters, help their family, contribute to their village and region and with that the whole of Kenya will move forward.
If you cannot help with money, help with your knowledge and ideas. Join hands with your families and your community.
Let all Kenyans come together and develop what we call ” Kenya”, a very thin skinned fabric of different nations with different languages and cultures.
