Former Foreign Affairs permanent secretary Macharia Kamau has sparked controversy with his recent statement about Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
According to Kamau, arriving at JKIA after an international trip feels like taking a step back in time. Kamau expresses his disappointment with the disheartening and chaotic sight of the urban sprawl outside the window, followed by the experience of entering the makeshift terminal which he likens to a warehouse. These conditions, in his opinion, reflect a lack of progress and development, as if the country is still stuck in the Stone Age.
Kenyans online have promptly reacted to Kamau’s comments, expressing their fury and reminding him of his previous position as a prominent government figure. They reproach him for his failure to tackle the problems at JKIA when he held power. A user named Kiprotich Lang’at singles out Kamau and other leaders, accusing them of neglecting to bring about significant changes in the government, favoring friends and family with tenders despite their subpar performance, and disregarding the enhancement of public transportation and urban development.
Lang’at contends that leaders should not complain about the same issues as citizens while possessing the ability to enact change.
Regrettably, JKIA has garnered negative attention recently, compounding the frustration felt by Kamau and many others. Experiencing frequent power blackouts and, more recently, the shame of leaky roofs has damaged the Airport’s reputation.
