On Sunday, 18 Kenyans, including Members of Parliament Wario Guyo and Hiribae Said Buya, were successfully rescued after getting lost in the Tana River.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has officially confirmed the successful evacuation of the team whose primary objective was to provide food aid to those impacted by EL Nino. This announcement marks the end of their ordeal. Additionally, it has been revealed by the Tana River County Government that one of their nominated Members of the County Assembly is among those saved. This remarkable rescue operation comes as a joint effort between the National Government and the Tana River County Government, with Dhadho Godhana guiding the process.

“The boat that went missing in the waters of Tana River has been found. All occupants have been evacuated to safety,” a statement from the Interior Ministry read.

After encountering some initial challenges in finding the group, security agencies managed to establish communication on Saturday evening and confirmed their safety. To assist in the search efforts, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki coordinated a search team comprising various agencies, with the Kenya Coast Guard at the helm. One of the MPs recounts that they encountered a setback during their journey on a motorboat, which resulted in them meandering through the waters without direction for several hours.

“We need rescuing at this point it is a case of emergency,” the legislators pleaded with the Kenya Coast Guard.

To address the aftermath of El Nino-induced flooding, CS Kindiki has revealed a plan to relocate a total of 30,000 Kenyan citizens. The government’s relocation strategy focuses on the following counties: Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, and Garissa.
