Kenya Hit by Widespread Power Outage, Again
Nairobi Among Parts of the Country Experiencing Electricity Outage

On Saturday evening, Kenya was hit with a power outage that left many parts of the country in darkness.

Initially, the full scope of the power outage was uncertain; however, Kenya Power admitted the power loss and guaranteed the public that their engineers were diligently addressing the issue. They also committed to providing regular updates on the blackout and its origin. At 10 pm, power was successfully reinstated in areas such as Mt Kenya, Nyanza, Western, and North Rift.

Kenya Power expressed its relief and assured that progress was being made in restoring power to the remaining areas. News of power outages poured in from various regions including Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Vihiga, Makueni, Uasin Gishu, Bomet, Taita Taveta, Kwale, and others. The primary electricity supplier, KenGen, was responsible for a major blackout that led to significant financial losses for businesses heavily reliant on electricity for their daily operations.

In locations like Githurai, Mwihoko, Chokaa, Kayole, Roysambu, and the Eastern Bypass in Nairobi, businesses were compelled to shut down for the entire day. Due to the frequent interruptions in the electricity supply, Gabriel Kamau, the proprietor of an electronics store in Githurai, was compelled to close down his business. This is not the first occurrence of widespread power outages in the country, as one lasting more than 20 hours occurred on August 26.

In response to this incident, legislators called upon Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror for an explanation. System disruptions were identified as the cause of similar blackouts that took place in Nairobi, Mount Kenya, and coastal regions in December and November of 2022.
