I Did Not Endorse Kalonzo for 2027, Says Raila

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has addressed the media reports suggesting that he has endorsed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on Monday, Raila clarified that he simply commended Kalonzo for his unwavering support in previous elections. He emphasized that his words were meant to recognize and appreciate Kalonzo’s contributions, rather than to indicate his own departure from active politics. Raila’s spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, reiterated that Raila’s praises for Kalonzo’s commitment, Christian values, and nationwide support should not be interpreted as an endorsement for his presidential candidacy in 2027. The statement further clarified that Raila’s kind words should not be misconstrued as an intention to retire from politics.

The former Prime Minister emphasized that it is premature for any political party to announce their presidential candidate as Kenyans have four years until the next general election. The identity of the candidate who will challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 election remains undisclosed until a year or a few months prior to the event, according to sources. Raila, however, expressed his confidence in Kalonzo’s ability to defeat Ruto in a fair presidential race, countering Ruto’s recent claim of an easy victory over Kalonzo. Raila also reassured Azimio supporters that he will remain actively involved in both party and national politics until 2027.

During a recent event, Raila praised Kalonzo Musyoka for his unwavering support throughout their political journey, despite not being chosen as Raila’s running mate in the 2022 presidential elections. Raila described Kalonzo as a trustworthy and loving individual with a good heart, strong work ethic, and unwavering Christian faith. In response to President Ruto’s remarks about Kalonzo, Raila emphasized that Kalonzo is far superior to Ruto and denounced Ruto’s attempts to create division between them.
