Azimio leader Raila Odinga now says that the government is on the wrong path.
Raila voiced concerns in a Wednesday interview, noting expert opinions that suggest the government lacks the expertise to revive the economy. He further conveyed his concern regarding the government’s misplaced priorities but showed readiness to give advice. Taking note of the unfavourable environment riddling Kenyan entrepreneurs, Raila said he is willing to offer practical guidance to rectify the situation. However, he notes that his expertise is disregarded by the present regime which believes that they are knowledgeable in all subject areas.
He criticized their dismissive attitude, explaining that any attempt to voice concerns is met with accusations of seeking personal gain. Raila emphasised that he and his party are satisfied with their current position and are not hoping for any compromises or favours. Ruto’s administration has been receiving criticism for trying to mask Kenya’s ailing economy as a stable one. Azimio presented their recommendations to the National Dialogue Committee, seizing a moment to present their suggestions. Their memorandum highlighted the need for better governance and how comprehensive representation would unlock the greater potential of the governing apparatus.
In Azimio’s view, the government has not fulfilled its obligation to maintain ethnic diversity and regional equality in public and state positions. The former Prime Minister revealed that his security was withdrawn by the government three months ago and has not been reinstated. Speaking on Wednesday, Raila asserted that he will not plead for the return of his security, as he is legally entitled to protection as the former Prime Minister of Kenya. He also noted that instituting any legal action towards this end is unfeasible as the bench’s integrity could be compromised.
With unwavering faith in God’s protection, Raila declared that he remains unaffected even after the removal of his security. He understands that his true safety lies in the hearts of Kenyans, who remain firmly in support of his cause. In the recent past, amidst anti-government marches, opposition leaders were stripped of their official security details, the ruling party blaming them for exploiting the privilege while demonstrators intensified the clashes with police.
