Renson Ingonga has officially become the third Director of Public Prosecution, following a ceremony at State House on Monday.
The event was graced by high-ranking personalities including President William Ruto and Chief Justice Martha Koome. President Ruto highlighted the importance of Ingonga’s working relationships with fellow professionals in the Judicial system. In a statement, Ruto guaranteed to fulfil the requisite support necessary to execute accountability. Ruto also acknowledged that criticism and the urgency for candour align with democracy’s basic principles in Kenya. Furthermore, President Ruto is confident that Ingonga is capable of providing the best service throughout his eight-year tenure in office.
Having previously held the position of Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecution for the North Eastern region, Ingonga has recently been given the nod of approval by Members of Parliament to take on the new role. His new posting officially designates him as the successor to Noordin Haji who is now the Director General of the National Intelligence Service. Mr. Haji, in turn, took up the position from former occupant Keriako Tobiko.
Meanwhile, the UDA party has disassociated itself from remarks made by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei who recently suggested an extension of the presidential term limits to seven years from the present five years. The party’s Secretary-General Cleophas Malala asserts that the party’s priority is upholding its commitments to the Kenyan people. According to the SG, the current term limit duration is inadequate to action and oversee a competent team to implement their election pledges.
The term limit outlined in the constitution is only five years with the possibility of being re-elected only once.
