The family of a 20-year-old college student is seeking justice after she was allegedly scalded by her Kenyan boyfriend who lives in the United States.
The victim’s family has reported the incident to the police and is requesting that Interpol arrest the suspect, Sheldon Ombongi, and bring him back to Kenya to face charges. The family’s lawyer Mr Danstan Omari has stated that the Department of Immigration must be involved in the case and they are seeking information about Ombongi’s status in the USA. The family is insisting that the US Embassy in Kenya order Ombongi’s repatriation to face justice for the assault.
The family of the victim from Mosocho in Kitutu Chache Constituency is calling for the United States Embassy in Kenya to extradite the Kenyan national from Minnesota to be brought to justice for an alleged assault. The young woman, Mercy Momanyi, suffered from second-degree burns on her chest, legs, and face. She was hospitalized for three weeks in a private hospital in Kisii town but has now been discharged to recover at home. Apparently, her US boyfriend assaulted her after a disagreement. The young woman claims that he allegedly burnt her with boiling water and has since vanished.
The police are currently investigating an alleged assault that occurred after a disagreement between the lovers. The boyfriend allegedly burned his mother when she intervened, after which he escaped to the US. Mercy provided details about the assault in a statement saying that she is 20 years old and was hit by Sheldon Ombongi after she brought up a topic he did not want to discuss.
She claims that her boyfriend had developed a pattern of attacking her every time he was in Kenya. The second-year Human Resource student at a college in Embu disclosed that she cannot go back to college due to the fact that her boyfriend has prevented her from doing so, both by physically forcing her to stay and by taking away her important documents.
A human rights advocate in Kisii, Mr. Elijah Anyona, has expressed his denunciation of the incident and made an appeal for the government to take appropriate action. According to the medical professionals at Bosongo Hospital, the victim sustained second-degree burns, which covered 10% of their entire body surface and resulted in her inability to walk or stand. The victim’s relatives including her sister Brilliant Momanyi disclose that the family of the assailant have agreed to extend financial assistance provided that the complainant retracts her case. Dorice Aburi, the Kisii Woman Representative has lamented over the increased occurrences of gender-based violence in Kisii and criticized authorities for negligence in protecting victims.
“In the recent past, cases of gender-based violence have been ramped up in this region. Whenever victims run to the police for protection, officers claim that domestic matters are not supposed to be handled by police,” says Ms Aburi.

Violence is not acceptable by any name. When parents abuse children, we dont call it parent- based violence.Talking of”relative-based violence” In one of the dailies today, some grand kids beat their grand pa to death.
So apparently if we dont call it gender-based violence cops in this area would protect the victims,is that it?
The key is to avoid violence before it happens.I leave that to the experts. But we can all agree that one way to minimize this problem is- ‘DONT DATE A VIOLENT OR INSECURE PERSON.’

Serious details are missing…
Serious details are missing here. What circumstances prompted this action of burning? Couldn’t there be another means to square out the differences? What was the time frame from the incident to the flight? In serious cases, a suspect can be apprehended even during flight? It looks like there are loopholes here.

@ Willy K’gutu,I have given some thought to your comment, and the closest circumstance that might prompt this kind of action is if she was advancing toward him with a panga raised, and ready to strike and the hot water was already in his hands…In other words self defense. But as you said, details are missing. So I will refrain from further speculation, and await more to unfold….
As for your question as to whether this could have been handled differently,of course there are always safer alternatives. But these alternatives call for a sane mind.
