Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria on Thursday shared a story on how he and a group of prominent individuals, including politicians and celebrities, had to hide in a cactus plantation at former opposition leader Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s home when police officers came to disrupt their gathering.

The CS recounted that former President Daniel Arap Moi had imposed a curfew prohibiting any events or ceremonies at the residence after 6 p.m. However, Jaramogi’s family and community leaders organized a disco ‘matanga’ against the former regime’s wishes. The following year, when they returned to celebrate Jaramogi’s life, the Moi administration did not want them to mark the anniversary.

“On January 20, 1994, we were here to bury Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the man who instructed former Homa Bay Senator Gerald Otieno Kajwang to represent me in court, to which, I got an injunction that stopped me from being expelled from the University of Nairobi,” Kuria stated.

The Cabinet Secretary revealed that Jaramogi had saved him from possible expulsion while he was studying at the University of Nairobi. He identified him as one of the most influential people in his life, referring to him as both a mentor and a father. Looking back on a political journey taken with Governor James Orengo and Senator Oburu Odinga in 1994, Kuria can not help but express gratitude for their current political position.

He explained how a group of police officers interrupted a celebration where a local musician had just begun performing and proceeded to beat the attendees and chase after him and Oburu, Raila’s older brother. He promised Raila and leaders from Nyanza that he is dedicated to ensuring progress and development for the region.

“The police then descended on us, and forced Oburu and I to hide inside a nearby cactus plantation inside the compound of Kang’oo Ka’Jaramogi. The music started at around 6:30 p.m. No sooner had the musician Okach Biggy started playing music than the police intervened, and threw teargas at us,” Kuria narrated.

The Trade CS was speaking in Siaya during the launch of an Industrial Park that has the potential to revolutionize the region. This brilliant project promises to generate employment opportunities, bolster local businesses and invigorate economic growth. With a budget of Sh500 million and years of pre-development planning, this project has the makings of an industrial and commercial success story
