President William Ruto has confirmed that the government is on track to provide free healthcare to all Kenyans.
The Universal Health Coverage (UHC) programme has been approved by the Cabinet and awaits parliamentary endorsement. As part of the UHC, each citizen will be required to contribute Sh300 to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), a reduction from the previous Sh500. President Ruto has stated that the funding system will be changed so that vulnerable groups can access NHIF free of charge, with those earning less paying less and those earning more paying more.
The UHC will also incorporate Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and a health digital system. The government is committed to preventive healthcare with community health workers and NHIF reforms. Counties will contribute Sh5,000 per month towards CHPs’ pay. President Ruto made these comments while on a tour of the Western region and while opening the Luanda sub-county hospital complex in Vihiga County on Tuesday.
Starting in October, all CHPs will be equipped with smartphones to assist in the effective delivery of the UHC programme. Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has assured that the necessary equipment will be provided at the community level. Meanwhile, the president has warned opposition leaders against violent demonstrations.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula have urged the Western region to support the government and give the president time to deliver to the people of Kenya. Other attendees included Luanda MP Dickson Maungu, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba, and Vihiga Women Representative Beatrice Adagala.

Yes, Healthcare lip service…
Yes, Healthcare lip service to all. Before you even entertain an idea like that Dr.Ruto contact the WHO and ask them how many nurses and doctors are needed per capita in Kenya.Once you acertain that you can attain that ratio, and sustain it, then think about their paychecks. We are tired of healthcare workers going on strike because they are being underpaid, and over worked.
Yes there was atime when healthcare in Kenya was free to all Kenyans. So It can be done. What we need is the will to do it.If we are losing 2 billion shilling each day due to corruption, Imagine what we could do with that cash for mwananchi if the holes are plugged.
