On Tuesday, a mechanical issue with a Kenya Airways (KQ) flight to Mombasa left hundreds of passengers stranded at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Flight KQ 606 was meant to leave at 1 pm but had a malfunction preventing it from taking off. A passenger confirmed that the plane was already boarded when the captain reported the situation, assuring them that it would be resolved in 20 minutes. However, after the plane was fueled and the engine started it shut down after a few minutes and the passengers have been waiting for over three hours.
According to the Director of Operations at KQ, Paul Njoroge, the flight left at the scheduled time but faced a minor problem. The crew is currently resolving the problem to resume the passenger service as quickly as they can. Upon inquiry, Njoroge requested additional time to verify if the flight had taken off.
“The plane was on time to depart but just like in any machine it developed a glitch, which our team has fixed,” Njoroge said.
In order to increase its revenue streams, Kenya Airways has aspirations to venture into new markets. The company has joined forces with Delta Airlines, endeavouring to extend travel options for customers throughout Africa and the United States. With its exclusive direct flights serving as a portal to the US, Kenya Airways hopes to turn the tides of its economic downturns.
The airline operates just one direct flight each day, departing Nairobi en route to America which is the only one available in East Africa. The CEO of Kenya Airways, Allan Kilavuka, says the agreement will allow seamless connectivity for those travelling to Africa through JFK.
