On August 17th, President William Ruto nominated Renson Mulele Ingonga to be the next Director of Public Prosecutions.
In a memo sent to the National Assembly, the President says that Ingonga is a qualified legal practitioner who will serve with honour. The President asked the National Assembly to vet Ingonga in accordance with the legal procedure. Ingonga was chosen among 30 candidates who were shortlisted for interviews.
After reviewing a list of three qualified individuals provided by the selection panel, the President selected Ingonga for the position. Ingonga currently works in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as Assistant Director, a position he has held for nearly a decade. He holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Laws degree in International Criminal Law from the University of Cape Town, and has additional certification as a mediator and arbitrator.
The upcoming DPP will be dedicated to probing economic crimes and corruption. He is a staunch supporter of ensuring that justice and human rights are prioritized in all circumstances. The selection panel had underscored the key requirements needed for the post, which included a University-awarded law degree, admission to Kenya’s High Court, and a tenure of no less than a decade serving as a qualified magistrate.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) holds the head role in prosecuting every criminal case in the country, excluding military matters. This fundamental responsibility requires the DPP to independently make prosecution decisions without political interference. Ingonga has been appointed to oversee criminal investigations and provide needed guidance. Additionally, Ingonga will handle international relations regarding extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance.
Assuming the position from Noordin Haji, who now heads the National Intelligence Service, Ingonga will offer guidance to government authorities regarding the formulation and implementation of criminal law. Moreover, as the Director of Public Prosecutions, it’s his job to extend legal counsel and assistance to relevant governing institutions.
