The US government has issued recommendations for Kenya to attract more investments and strengthen its system of governance.

On Wednesday, the US ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, praised the investment opportunities in Kenya, terming it the best investment destination in Africa. The recommendations include a review of Kenya’s tax policy, a more aggressive fight against corruption, and the implementation of attractive trade policies. Whitman acknowledged the government’s efforts to combat corruption but stressed the need for more action to contain the vice and regain public trust.

“President William Ruto has cracked down on corruption by calling out government agencies that engage in unscrupulous practices and firing government officials involved in corruption but there is a lot to be done to contain the vice. Kenya must have consistent and transparent and fairly administered national tax policy to attract and retain direct investments and accelerate economic development,” she noted.

She also recommended that Kenya revise its tax policy to become more appealing to both local and international investors. She highlighted that as the year comes to an end, Kenya remains the top export market for the United States. According to Whitman, the country presents a range of investment opportunities, particularly in finance, logistics, and technology, as it serves as a hub for East Africa.

She further said the nation’s stable democracy and reliable transport infrastructure, including the standard gauge railway and air transport, make it a desirable destination for investors. Former US Ambassador to Kenya, Kyle McCarter, has praised Kenya’s recent elections, stating that the 2022 General Election was the most credible in the country’s history. In advancing the pace of digitalization, Safaricom CEO Alex Ngdawa is collaborating with authorities across the region toward service optimization within the fields of healthcare and technology. The MyCounty App, introduced as a way to boost information availability and exchange, already has 14 counties on board.
