Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has blasted Raila Odinga’s effort to collect signatures to oust the Kenya Kwanza government as pointless.
On Friday, Raila launched the collection of 10 million signatures to dethrone President William Ruto. While speaking in Giaituu Village in Mathira constituency on Saturday, Gachagua said elections aren’t decided by signatures. He went on to say that Raila is a failed political “project”, and the Saba Saba protests will likely end in disappointment. The DP declared that there is no constitutional provision for the accumulation of signatures and that Raila’s ambition to remove Ruto from power is doomed to fail.
“Even if they collect those signatures, where will they take them? People signed on the ballot and that was the end. They are saying they will remove Ruto from power. How will they if they failed when he was not in power? There is no constitutional provision for the collection of signatures,” Gachagua said.
On Monday, Raila reiterated his Saba Saba agenda. The ODM leader was speaking during a political rally at Asango in Sigomre, where he affirmed that the power ultimately lies with the people. The ODM leader also disputed Ruto’s regime as heavily flawed. On Tuesday, Raila Odinga reaffirmed the opposition’s resolve for non-violent civil disobedience to pressure the government to repeal the Finance Act 2023 which Ruto had assented to.
To demonstrate their grievances, the Azimio brigade and their supporters assembled at the historic Kamukunji Grounds on Friday for a rally. He then unveiled a petition which aims to remove Ruto from office, and he was the first to sign it.
