Kalonzo Blasts Kamba Community for ‘Chickening Out’ of Maandamano

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has chided the Kamba community for not participating in the Azimio-led anti-government protests. 

Mr Musyoka created the impression that his backyard might be another weak link in his Presidential aspirations. The opposition coalition recently held demonstrations to push for the reduction of the cost of living and the reform of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Speaking on Tuesday at the Miumbuni Secondary School in Machakos County, where he was presiding over a new school dormitory, the former Vice President lamented that the Kamba people failed to participate in the demonstrations.

“When I looked back during the demonstrations I did not spot any of my MPs. If Kambas behave as boldly as the Luos did during the demonstrations, we shall deliver the presidential seat early in the morning,” he said as he called on his lieutenants and supporters to appear in large numbers should Azimio resume mass action.

Mr Musyoka called for the resumption of the bipartisan talks between the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition and the Kenya Kwanza administration. The talks meant to address demands voiced by Azimio stalled a fortnight ago after the opposition faction removed their representatives from the bipartisan committee, claiming that the government was not acting in good faith. The ex-vice president, who has already revealed his plans to contest in the 2027 presidential race, believes that a successful conclusion of the bipartisan discussions will not only help promote unity in the nation but also raise his chances of beating President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.

The Wiper boss affirmed that he is not ready to be a victim of electoral rigging “like Azimio leader Raila Odinga whose victory was stolen in the 2013, 2017 and 2022 general elections”. Kalonzo believes that reforming the IEBC will make the 2027 elections fair.
