Waititu Rushed to Hospital After Collapsing at Home

On Monday, the hearing of the corruption case against former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, which pertains to a Sh588 million tender award to Testimony Enterprise Limited, was unable to proceed following his collapse at home the previous evening. 

His lawyer John Swaka informed a Nairobi court that Mr Waititu had been rushed to the Agha Khan University Hospital for treatment by his wife Susan Wangari who is also a defendant in the case.

“I was informed today morning that my client Mr Waititu and his wife are in hospital after he collapsed yesterday and was rushed to Agha Khan where he is admitted,” lawyer Swaka said while asking for an adjournment. 

The trial judge Thomas Nzioki consented to the request and set the case for hearing on Tuesday. He also instructed the attorney to present the defendant’s medical papers. Mr Nzioki also mandated Ms Wangari to be present in court. The case was arising for hearing of proof by a documents examiner given by the prosecution. The prosecution witness was set to testify on inspection of Kiambu County government tender assessment records and payment vouchers authorized by a representative from the county government. He was also to give evidence concerning the contract papers signed by the former county leader as well as an agreement of sale between Saika Two Estate Developers Ltd, linked to Mr Waititu, and Superior Phone Ltd, and report on any investigation into the signatures. 

The case revolves around bestowing a contract worth Sh588,198,328 for improving various gravel roads to Bitumen standard in Thika, Limuru, Gatundu North, Juja and Ruiru sub-counties in Kiambu County. The tender was granted to Testimony Enterprises Limited. Mr Waititu, his wife, former County Chief Officer for Roads Luka Mwangi, businessman Charles Chege (director of Testimony Ltd), and Ms Elizabeth Wangechi have all been accused of offences related to conflict of interest, dealing in suspect property, abuse of office, neglecting to comply with the regulations concerning procurement processes, and fraudulent practices. Furthermore, they have been accused of fraudulent acquisition of public property public and money laundering.
