Azimio la Umoja coalition has initiated a plan to remove lawmakers who have shifted allegiance to the ruling party.
The move comes amid Raila’s utterance that the coalition ought to remove disloyal members. ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said that through the bipartisan committee, they will explore ways to streamline the removal of a disloyal party member within three months of shifting allegiance. For this to be a success, Section 14(2) of the Political Parties Act will demand an amendment.
Mr Sifuna lamented that the provisions inherent in Section 14(2) call for the resignation of party members if they echo the ideology of another political outfit. However, the process to expel such members deemed to have resigned is often tedious. Mr Sifuna blamed party betrayal on the wearisome process of expelling such members.
The Nairobi senator affirmed that Azimio’s committee in the bipartisan talk will delve into issues of political fidelity and the respect of multiparty democracy.
“Immediately you pronounce that you are going to work with a party different from the one which sponsored you, then there should be a by-election within three months without us being subjected to the long process when people have made their decision,” he said.
Mr Odinga has been active in denouncing those who provoke party commitment, urging them to resign from their positions and seek a fresh mandate from the people. In ODM, several MPs have proved to support the Kenya Kwanza ideology including MPs Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o (Lang’ata), Paul Abuor (Rongo), and John Owino (Awendo)
