President William Ruto speaking on Sunday at Statehouse apologised to Kenyans over the Shakahola massacre.
The president blamed the slackness of the government for the occurrence of the incident. He mentioned that Criminal Investigation Department will scrutinise the incident to give Kenyans a detailed report of the happenings. He had earlier said that he is dedicated to preventing a repeat of the Shakahola incident.
“As the President, Shakahola should not have happened. For that, I truly say I’m sorry. It is evident that there was laxity in our Government that unfortunately resulted in the death of many Kenyans. I am not taking it lightly,” he said
The President said that more than 200 people have lost their lives while seeking spiritual direction. Earlier, Mr Ruto established a 17-member task force to rethink the regulatory framework controlling the working of religious institutions in Kenya. One of the task force’s duties is to identify gaps that have enabled radical religious leaders to dupe millions of Kenyans.
The committee members include Bishop Mark Kariuki, Bishop (Dr) Eli Rop, Archbishop Maurice Muhatia, Judy Thongori, Rev (Dr) Alphonse Kanga, Bishop Philip Kitoto and Dr Faridun Abdalla. The task force secretaries are Martin Ndiwa Talian and Maria Goretti Nyariki.
